Yorkies in general do not eat very much and need high quality food.
We feed Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier dry food. Always have a tube of Nutri Cal around. We provide you with a bag of puppy food and one tube of Nutri Cal when your puppy goes to his new home
We also feed very small amounts of beef liver, heart or chicken, cheese and carrots. As a supplement for a nice shiny coat we give cod liver oil.
Never give Chocolate and please stay away from table scraps.
We believe in free feeding, that means we have dry food and water out at all times.
Please brush your puppy daily, clean the corner of his eyes daily and keep the hair around his anus trimmed as well as the hair on the pads of his feet. Your Yorkie will require weekly showers. These little dogs do not have fur like other breeds. Their hair is very human like and will not keep them warm. There is a good variety of products on the market that you can use to shampoo and condition. Just like humans your puppy may not agree with a certain product and feel itchy and uncomfortable. Please keep searching until you find a product that is tolerated by your puppy.
We use Coat Handler shampoo and conditioner and sometimes # 1 All Systems conditioner and plush puppy seabreeze oil for deep conditioning. Before brushing we spray Ultra Shine Conditioner Spray on our Yorkies coat. For best results brush and condition when hair is wet or damp.
Please keep hair out of your Yorkies eyes. You can trim it or hold it back with bows, ribbons, elastics etc. Just remember whatever you put in your puppies hair can be pulled out and swallowed as well as damage the hair.
Yorkies do not require a lot of exercise and can easily be kept in an appartment. They love going for walks, running, playing and generally spending time with you. Please use a harness to protect their little throat when going for walks. Don't allow your Yorkie to jump from the couch, bed etc. as they can easily damage their little legs.
When you take your Yorkie home start immediatly with housetraining. Take your puppy to the area that you want him to use to eliminate and wait until he has done his business. This can be a spot outside or a litter box inside. Your puppy will need to go pee after waking up, playing and eating. Keep a close watch as there are sure signs that he has to go. Never yell at your puppy or hit it and always praise after he has done his job.
Your puppy can easily be trained if you are willing to follow a strict schedule.
At first your puppy will have to go a lot. It will seem that he pees and poops all the time. This is normal. By the time your puppy reaches 6 months of age he should sleep through the night and eliminate right after waking up in the morning.
We believe in crate training. By the time our puppies leave our home they are used to sleeping in a crate. At first we keep the door off and a few days before they go to their new home we get them used to staying for short periods of time with the door closed. A crate is never to be used as punishment. It is and should always be your dogs safe place.
If you use a crate that is too big your puppy will sleep on one side and eliminate on the other.
Please brush your puppies teeth regularly. Plaque will build up and cause all kinds of problems including heart disease if not taken care of. Your vet can check your Yorkies teeth and may need to remove plaque. It is common for toy breeds to retain some baby teeth. Don't be alarmed if some of your puppies baby teeth do not fall out. Your vet can easily extract them. We take our puppies in to have the remaining baby teeth pulled by the age of 6 months to maintain a good bite.
We recommend that you take your puppy to your vet as soon as you pick him up. This will give you piece of mind as well as develop your relationship with your vet.
Our puppies leave with two sets of 5 way vaccines as well as three wormings. We start the new owner on a free six week pet insurance plan.
Your puppy will need to see the vet at age 16 weeks and 6 month for the next check up and vaccine. We recommend that at this time you have your puppy neutered.
It is very easy for your vet to pull any left over baby teeth at the same time and the extra cost is minimal.
